In 1854 – 1858 The SS Great Eastern, the largest iron sailing / steam ship ever built, was constructed at Burrells Wharf on the River Thames adjacent to The Ship Inn. It was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and built by J. Scott Russell & Co. The SS Great Eastern was broken up in 1889.
Burrells Wharf is now a riverside apartment complex and the original slipway that was built for the SS Great Eastern has been preserved and can still be seen today. As did the ship builders of the past partake in a few tankards of ale at The Ship Inn, so do the new tenants of the luxury flats.
Our Victorian pub provides an ideal haven in which to enjoy quality stone baked pizzas and drink in relaxed surroundings.
